Welcome to Sonia Kang Designs, formerly known as Thehappeasunflower.

I rediscovered my love for painting during the summer of lockdown in 2020. Working at the dining table, making endless mess, and slowly rebuilding my confidence through creativity. What began as a personal outlet soon grew into something I never imagined … sharing my work with people around the world.

As a British South Asian artist, pursuing a creative career hasn’t always felt straightforward. Navigating expectations, fear of judgment, and the pressure to live for others often made it difficult to imagine art as a viable path. Over time, I learned the importance of choosing myself and choosing creativity even when it felt uncomfortable.

My work is deeply influenced by culture, memory, and emotion. I draw inspiration from my surroundings, travels, and artists such as Van Gogh, while incorporating materials like oils, acrylics, gel, palette knives, and mixed media. Recently, my practice has become more personal, reflecting themes of identity, reflection, and remembrance. Elements inspired by Indian textiles and adornment appear throughout my work. Intertwining my heritage, family, and passions.

Painting is my safe space. It brings purpose, calm, and light into my life, particularly during periods of grief, change and anxiety. I often paint with music playing and sunlight filling the room, allowing intuition to guide each piece.

It still feels surreal to call myself an artist. Thank you for supporting my art and this evolving journey, it truly means the world!!
